Las Vegas: A Hub for Pro Teams, High School Lacrosse, and What’s Ahead

Hey Las Vegans, Mason Lopez here. Every time I cover the sports scene in our town, I’m struck by how rapidly we’re growing—not just as a destination for pro teams and events, but as a community where high school and college athletics matter more than ever. Here’s a snapshot of where we’re at, what’s changing, and what local fans should be watching.

Pro Teams Anchoring Las Vegas

Las Vegas now hosts three major professional teams: the Raiders (NFL at Allegiant Stadium), the Golden Knights (NHL at T-Mobile Arena), and the Aces (WNBA at Michelob ULTRA Arena). These aren’t just newcomers—they’ve become part of the city’s identity. The Golden Knights lifted the Stanley Cup, and the Aces won back-to-back WNBA titles. The Aviators (Triple-A baseball), Lights FC (USL soccer), Silver Knights in the AHL, Knight Hawks indoor football, and the Desert Dogs lacrosse team make up a strong supporting cast. The MLB’s Athletics are expected in a new ballpark along the Strip by around 2028.

High School to College: Growth at the Grassroots

Locally, high school sports are booming in ways that matter beyond just Friday night lights. One big shift: the Clark County School District (CCSD) reversed its pause on high school lacrosse and is partnering with the Las Vegas Desert Dogs to start it up in nine district schools. That change lifted spirits—and reportedly participation—among students at schools like Coronado High. Sports like tennis, volleyball, and track continue to produce standout athletes at Boulder City, Las Vegas High School, and others. And college programs—especially UNLV—remain central to community pride and sports development.

What’s on the Horizon?

Several major developments are underway:

  • MLB arrival: The A’s move expected by 2028 will bring a true MLB presence to Las Vegas, adding both an economic boost and a year-round pro baseball option.
  • Potential NBA or women’s pro hockey expansions: Leagues are keeping Las Vegas on their radar. A Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) expansion team has been confirmed to join T-Mobile Arena. The NBA is also exploring expansion toward our market.
  • Investing in youth and equity: The revival of lacrosse at CCSD schools shows how partnerships—between districts and professional teams—can remove cost barriers, add coaches, gear, and opportunities. Capitalizing on that will mean making space and funding for more sports across schools in every part of the valley.

Why It Matters Locally

More pro teams mean more local jobs, more entertainment, and more reasons for young athletes to aim high. When high schools in the valley offer sport options—from traditional ones like basketball and football to emerging ones like lacrosse—the benefits go beyond the fields. Community cohesion, health, scholarships—all of it rises with opportunity.

What Fans in Las Vegas Should Watch For

  1. Where the A’s build that new stadium—and how accessible it is for local families.
  2. Which high schools grow strongest in lacrosse, and whether CCSD schools expand sport offerings elsewhere.
  3. What new venues come online or expand: Las Vegas already added several in recent years, but every new court, pitch, or rink helps make sports more local.
  4. How college athletic departments—including UNLV—navigate conference shifts or rising costs in the changing college sports landscape.

Bottom line: our sports world here in Vegas isn’t just growing—it’s diversifying. From youth leagues on local fields to world-class pro arenas, we’re writing a new chapter in what it means to be a sports city. And that chapter is going to need all of us—fans, parents, coaches—to help write it well.
